Character Information
Name: Saber (Richard the Lionheart)
Canon: Fate/Strange Fake
Canon Point: Vol. 4, after meeting Sigma
Age: Late teens-early twenties
History: Wiki
Personality:
Richard makes a powerful first impression. He's the sort of person who has an immediate presence, described as almost a “heat” around him that draws everyone's attention. He carries himself with a regal bearing, always conscious of his status as a king. He also has the sort of charisma that draws people to him and keeps them there. This all comes very naturally to him rather than being something that he's cultivated or something that he puts on when he needs to. It doesn't turn off, because if there's one thing that's true across the board about Richard the Lionheart, it's that, well, nothing about him turns off.
In a way, it's hard to tell if Richard is the sort of person who needs an audience or not because he always has one. If someone is around to talk to, he's talking to them. If no one living is around to talk to, he'll talk to whoever he has with him as part of his Noble Phantasm instead. However, the conversation is never 100% reciprocal. If he has an interest in common with whomever he's speaking to, that's what they'll talk about. If he doesn't have an interest in common with them, then he'll talk about himself, what he's interested in, or whatever happens to be crossing his mind at that point in time. Though he's not particularly egotistical, he really does like talking about himself, whether that's a good idea or not. As a Servant, he's supposed to keep his identity as secret as possible to give himself an advantage in combat, but that apparently doesn't matter to him at all because he likes to drop autobiographical information every chance he gets. He's completely honest about it, too, and one of his favorite topics is the mistakes he made in life and what he regrets about them.
That Richard can be so honest about his personal failings is part of his general easygoing, optimistic nature. He tends to take everything in stride and keeps a smile on his face no matter what the situation. He may have regrets about his past and certainly he realizes what brought them about, but he's a man that lives in the moment and any single moment in time seems just peachy to him. He's described by Ayaka as “a giant cat, acting on spinal reflex and with unbelievable energy” who “would happily pounce on a tuft of green foxtail swaying in the breeze dozens of kilometers away if it caught his interest.” However, she also recognizes that he's aware of when he needs to put his own whims aside for the sake of another. It's just that sometimes he hasn't when he should have. This is because he can be quite stubborn about things he wants to do. If he gets it in his head that there's a certain course of action he wants to take, he's going to take it regardless of someone else's objections. And if that someone else is necessary for whatever it is he wants to pull off, he's pushy enough to drag them along with him. That's where that charisma of his can be dangerous.
Richard himself says that he's not a kind person, but that's not really the truth. He looks at times when he's acted in his own self-interest and considers himself to be more self-serving and callous than he really is (not that he's selfless, just a bit better than he gives himself credit for.) In canon, he's shown to care for his Master's safety and is willing to put aside his own whims to make sure that she's happy and taken care of. Ayaka notices this about him and it's one of the things that makes her willing to trust him, even when that doesn't always seem like a good idea. (When your first meeting with someone involves them vaporizing part of an opera house, it's easy to believe they aren't going to make any sort of sacrifice to help you out.) As a knight, Richard has a code of honor that he holds himself to, and this includes treating other people kindly and fairly. He strives to be honest and straightforward and he always keeps his word. Sometimes he has to bend things a little to pull that off, but an effort is always made. For example, he swears that he'll stay overnight in jail for destroying the opera house, but he makes so such promise about Ayaka, so he sees no problem with breaking her out. And since it takes him until morning to pull it off, that means he can leave as well and maintain a clear conscience. He did, after all, stay in the building.
Last, but certainly not least, Richard is a great big nerd. He soaks up whatever pop culture surrounds him and revels in it. If he has any downtime at all in canon, he's either reading, listening to music, or watching movies. He even takes up rock music himself because he can and is absolutely delighted by it. His main interest, though, is Arthurian legend. He knows the stories of King Arthur by heart (and probably knows multiple variations of each) and is generally a huge fanboy about them. He can't even put it aside in life or death situations, considering he decides at one point he's going to try fighting with a stick because Lancelot did that once and only manages to survive the attempt because he's managed to acquire a Noble Phantasm that lets him turn any weapon into Excalibur. Yes, he's fanboyed to the point that he's actually GAINED A MAGIC POWER BECAUSE OF IT.
Abilities:
Servant - Servants are spirits summoned forth into the material realm and so function a little differently from regular humans. Being summoned as a Servant gives these base characteristics in addition to class-specific skills:
- Knowledge of the present time period (Richard's, however, is incomplete due to his irregular summoning.)
- A material and spiritual form. In spirit form, the Servant is invisible and intangible, but their ability to sense and interact with the world around them is limited.
- A spirit core that must be destroyed to kill them. While their bodies can take damage and be impaired because of it, they cannot be killed unless the core is destroyed. Since the core is tied to their head and heart, damage to those parts will damage the core itself.
- Reliance on mana. A Servant is not self-sustaining and requires a mana source to remain manifested. It's assumed that, for the sake of the game, this will either not be necessary or something provided by the Heavens will function as a mana source.
Saber - Saber's two class skills are Magic Resistance and Riding. For the sake of everyone's sanity, I'm not giving him Magic Resistance. He'll retain his Riding skill, which allows him to competently ride/drive/pilot pretty much any form of transportation, whether he's familiar with it or not.
Excalibur - Essentially, anything Richard picks up that he could possibly use as a weapon becomes “Excalibur.” This renders whatever the object is capable of shooting a highly destructive energy beam. However, the durability of the item determines how powerful the attack is and how many times the ability can be used. For example, he can only use a stick to pull off one beam and the stick will crumble to dust once he deactivates the ability. To use the ability at full power, he needs to use an actual sword and even then its uses are probably finite.
Personal Abilities - Richard is a seasoned fighter from the age of mounted knights. His weapon of choice is the sword, but due to his eclectic range of interests, he's picked up how to use the full range of weaponry common to his era. He's also a quick study, so he picks up new styles of fighting after some observation. (Such as the time he decided he was going to try fighting barehanded after watching kung fu movies.) Richard also has a passion for music and is just as quick a study when it comes to that topic. He figures out how to play electric guitar more or less immediately upon being handed one and manages to improvise a solo off the top of his head.
Strengths: Honorable, kind, optimistic, charismatic, energetic
Weaknesses: Capricious, self-centered, stubborn, obsessive, pushy
God/Shinki: God
Why?: Richard was a king in life and even as a Heroic Spirit, he sees no reason to act as someone's subordinate. Also one of his abilities in canon (which he will not be retaining in-game) is to draw on the special skills of people he knew in life and confer with them to help him make decisions, much as a god would with their shinki.
Top 3 Choices: Michael, Raguel, Azrael (all Abrahamic)
God Type: Richard tends to be driven by his own whims and interests, so he'd be a fairly capricious god who only answers the prayers that catch his immediate attention. Or at least he would until it really sunk in that he was doing a disservice to the people who were praying to him, in which case he would do his best to answer as many prayers as possible...until he got distracted again. Basically, the only thing he's reliable for is killing ayakashi. If the prayer clearly involves killing ayakashi, or at the very least a good fight, he'll be there in a flash.
Power: Action Replication Essentially, this is his existing talent for picking up skills based on observation turned up to 11. If he can watch someone else do something (either in fiction or in real life), he can replicate it himself. However, if for some reason he's incapable of seeing the whole process and has to fill in the blanks himself, there's no guarantee that it's going to work right or at all.
